Brass Cotal Bell

One of my favorite recent finds, a small brass crotal bell. These little bells were commonly used from the 17th through the 19th centuries and were often attached to horse harnesses, livestock, or sleighs. Their distinctive ringing made it easier to keep track of animals while they were on the move.

Even though they aren’t made of gold or silver, crotal bells are a fantastic reminder of everyday colonial life. Every relic has a story, and this one once echoed across fields and roads long before any of us were here to hear it.

Sometimes the best discoveries aren’t the most valuable, they’re the ones that connect us to the past.
